The model of production we're continually developing at TAPE relies on those involved sharing their skills and experiences whilst also being open to learning from others. We work, learn and create together as a inclusive collective. One key member of the production team throughout the making of this movie has been John. He has taken on many roles but I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank John for the wonderful on-set photography he has done for us. John's beautiful images have given us an invaluable record of the production. Our sincere thanks to you John, for all your efforts and support.
"I first got involved with TAPE when they set up a project in Rhyl to make a film about the memories of locals and visitors who had worked or holidayed in sunny Rhyl between the 1940s and 1960s. As well as meeting the amazing team of Neil, Andy and Tom who taught us all new skills of film research, production and editing; our group also worked with poet laureate Sophie McKeand to write responses to our projects themes. A new creative experience for me.
The group interviewed a wide variety of locals and past visitors from all over Britain; for me, interviewing the people both in English and Welsh in front of the camera was a challenging task but very rewarding and gave me and the group members insights into the creative process of making a documentary.
Since then I have taken an active part with TAPE's community teams making drama and factual films on a variety of subjects including consumer issues, nature parks and archaeological sites on the North Wales coast.
The way TAPE encourages participants to have real hands-on experience in a relaxed and supportive manner is so uplifting to watch and take part in for me; and is one of its core strengths. At a time when the Arts are struggling as much as the rest of the nation during this pandemic its role in creative expression is vital in all our lives. TAPE is playing an important part in providing these creative opportunities for its local community in a safe and inclusive environment.
Over the last twelve months TAPE has been making its second feature film 'Approaching Shadows'; with professional actors and a large number of volunteers from around North Wales.
I have been part of the film crew and also working on the photo documentary recording the people and locations. It's been an exciting journey so far and has involved locations in Bala, Llyn Brenig, Denbigh Moors and the Conwy Valley. Conditions have been challenging working with the production team and actors at night and under some dramatic weather and unusual lighting setups.
The funniest been trying to get a double portrait of Steve and Andy the pouring rain at night dressing up a rug to look like a dead sheep that had been run over! I've been so privileged to be part of this team and be able to meet so many interesting and fun people from all over Wales. As someone who has hit the third age, it has kept me young at heart and I can't wait to get onto the next project."
